PRUNUS cerasifea ‘Newport’

Plum, Flowering –

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“Valued for its decorative purple foliage, this ornamental cherry makes an eye-catching focal point in the landscape. ‘Newport’ grows quickly to form a dense, rounded, symmetrical, medium-sized tree. Its dark purple foliage holds its deep color throughout the summer, turning an appealing purple-red in fall. Among the first trees to bloom in spring, it produces a frothy display of showy, fragrant, single, white to light pink flowers. These may be followed by a small crop of purple, cherry-sized, edible but bland fruits, which are irresistible to many songbirds.

This fast-growing tree prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. It is typically short-lived, and may start to decline after 10 to 15 years. Although susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, its rapid growth and striking appearance make this tree worthwhile to many gardeners. It is best grown as a single specimen.”
