Mother of Pearl –
“Grown for its showy fruit, ‘Magic Berry’ is a hybrid shrub developed in the early twentieth century by famed Dutch horticulturist S.G.A. Doorenbos. It forms a compact, dense, twiggy bush with arching branches. Insignificant pinkish flowers in summer give rise to plump round berries that ripen to bright rose-pink in late summer and early fall. The small dark green oval leaves turn dull yellow in fall before dropping, fully exposing the abundant, colorful fruits. Largely ignored by birds unless other foods are unavailable, the berries usually remain on the branches into winter.
Grow this adaptable and colorful shrub in sun to shade, keeping in mind that fruiting increases with sunlight. It tolerates all soil types and is an excellent candidate for garden sites where everything else seems to fail. It may look a bit unkempt after a few years and require a severe late winter pruning for rejuvenation. It is also susceptible to mildew, a fungus that discolors and disfigures the leaves. Use ‘Magic Berry’ in the mixed shrub border or as a low hedge; cut the berry-laced branches to use in arrangements.”
